Discover Summer: Get Outdoors

July 17–July 23

Between the highest mountains east of the Mississippi River in the blue ridge region, to the low-lying coastal plains, North Carolina is rich in scenery and biodiversity. A hike through the mountains or a walk on the greenway is the perfect opportunity to take in all that the great North Carolina outdoors has to offer. Don’t forget to show us how you enjoy the outdoors by posting on social media and using the hashtag #DiscoverSummerNC!

Here are seven things you can do as you get outside this Summer:

  1. PINE CONE WEATHER STATION

Did you know that pine cones close up during high humidity and before the rain comes? Use this to your advantage and set some pine cones outside where you can see them check the forecast. Here’s where you can learn more and how to make your own!

2. NC PATH EXPLORER PACKS

North Carolina Parks and Trails for Health (NC PATH) is an initiative designed to encourage physical activity in North Carolina’s parks, greenways, and other outdoor spaces. The PATH Explorer Packs are a fun new way to do exactly that with a ready-made outdoor adventure: Examine bugs, identify trees, watch and listen for birds, read a nature-themed book…these packs are PACKED with fun! The loanable packs are available at NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources sites.

3. VISIT A NEW STATE PARK/TRAVEL A NEW TRAIL

Hanging Rock State Park

North Carolina is home to so many state parks and recreation areas, there is always a new adventure waiting for you. Visit ncparks.gov to learn about each park, plan your visit, then make your way over! You can also check out trails.nc.gov to find information about state trails that showcase natural, cultural and historic resources of North Carolina.

North Carolina is a hotspot for birdwatching! You don’t have to be an expert or have a lot of expensive gear to begin birding. You just need to be outdoors, and pay attention. The National Audubon Society offers a handy guide to get started on your birding adventures. To make things even easier, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has NC birding checklists and trail maps ready to print.

5. HAVE A PICNIC

Spending time outside to eat a meal can improve concentration and lower stress. Find the perfect shady spot, lay out a blanket and enjoy a meal, any meal: Wake up with the sun and a fresh cup of coffee, break out the sunscreen and soak up every ounce of sun with your lunch, or bring your household around the picnic blanket and share dinner together with the great outdoors. Just try to avoid these food safety mistakes so you don’t serve a side of the tummy troubles with your meal.

6. CREATE YOUR OWN HIGHLAND GAMES

For generations, North Carolina has celebrated the long-standing tradition of the Scottish Highland Games. While the traditional games include competitions in athletics, bagpiping, drumming and dancing, feel free to use your imagination and create your own!

7. GO STARGAZING

Observe the wonders of the observable Outer Space and learn more about what’s going on outside of Planet Earth. Discover and learn constellations, observe the phases of the moon, and maybe spot a planet or two. Here’s where you can get started on your astronomical journey!

If you’re at the coast, get an especially extraordinary view of the night sky at Cape Lookout National Seashore, which is certified as an official International Dark Sky Park. Check the schedule for regular Astronomy Nights at the park for an unforgettable experience!
