North Carolina OBX Surf Shops

--

From the Appalachian Mountains to the Coastal Plains, each region of North Carolina has cultivated its own unique culture. The history and way of life of the inhabitants of the Outer Banks (OBX) have been defined by the ocean and the small-town values of family and community. Surfing has been tied to this region as far back as the early 1900s and the community which has grown around it reflects these values held by coastal Carolinians.

As an outsider, it can be intimidating stepping into what has become one of our state's most enduring subcultures. But the OBX has some of the warmest, most helpful, and passionate surfers found anywhere in the country. This is most evident in the surf shops that line the coast. Surf shops are essential parts of OBX communities from Wilmington to Corolla. Here’s an introduction to some of the oldest and most popular OBX surf shops.
